A Phoenix rises in Chianti Classico

Updated: Mar 30, 2023

Vecchie Terre Di Montefili is a small estate situated close to the heart of Chianti Classico in Panzano near Greve in Chianti. This estate was highly regarded until fate dealt it an unkind hand and a rapid decline ensued.

In 2016 new owners took over and have injected a new lease of life into this once revered estate.

A new team under the guidance of a young and hugely talented enologist Serena Gusmeri are transforming Vecchie Terre Di Montefili to new heights.

The first complete vintage is 2015.

The 2013 was in ethanol fermentation when the new team took over.

In such a short time (two years) the vineyards have had an enormous amount of attention.

The old winery has been subject to a make-over, new barriques and barrels have been purchased and a more streamline approach to wine making is the result. Being far from perfect, a completely new cellar is in its planning stage along with new equipment to assist Serena in her quest for excellence.

The tasting surprised and pleased in a way that I was not expecting: all Sangiovese bottlings gave a crystal clear expression of their terroir.

It is my hope and belief that following the path taken by this estate, success will follow success and we lovers of Sangiovese will be continually rewarded in years to come.
