My review this year centres on the 2022 vintage, alongside late release 2021, Riserva and Gran Selezione. Generally, the 2022 vintage reminds a little of 2015 and 2012, a mad mix if you like.
When writing about a particular vintage, I consider the general weather patterns of the region, and what I found regarding this vintage was rather surprising: Chianti Classico recorded the highest temperatures ever, coupled with the lowest annual rainfall on record. My first thoughts were, will these wines be fat, overripe with warm alcohol nuances on the back end, irregular, unripe or with bitter tannins, short lived with little balance and considerably forward… Am I depressing you? Although these wines do not possess the charm and quality of 2016, 2019 or 2021, they are juicy, well extracted, energetic and generous. This can be a result of significant rainfall in August and early September, that reinvigorated the fruit…Feeling less depressed now?
Looking back over the years of ‘Lucifer’ summer weather namely 2017, 2011, 2009 and 2003, the positive differences in 2022 were: the vines acclimatised with warmer conditions, were more mature and hardier. Also, the winemakers have considerable more knowledge in their arsenal than before.
So what does the buyer need to look out for prior to purchasing?
What are the cooler regions of Chianti Classico?
What are the vineyards with a northern east or west aspect?
What are the highest plantings of the denomination? Which in turn bring up…
Do I ignore the lower south facing regions or would some of these wines from warmer areas produce wines that are ‘ready to go,’ fully flushed out, and sumptuous?
You must understand once you broad stroke a vintage you run the risk of not picking up an outstanding and imposing wine. Two of the finest Italian wines in my cellar are vintage 2002, regarded as the worst vintage this century! …I suppose I have just made a case for the wine reviewer! :)
Recently, in Chianti Classico there are many wineries under new ownership and new management that will become the stars of tomorrow, it takes a long time to make a cult brand. Also worthy of mention are the new young breed of wine producers that are referred to as ‘natural winemakers.’ The influence of people like Jules Chaucer is ever present with his modern winemaking practices, namely a low-intervention approach, aiming to make wines that show style, tone and micro terroir.

Deep ruby red in colour with Amber rim. On the nose it shows a less fresher complexity than previously experienced. Aromas of prune, caramel, fig and black tea. It’s also lost some of its weight. Blackberry fruit still projects, alongside stewed plum. Still a shadow of tannin and acid interaction. Well along its plateau of optimum. The palate reflects the bouquet. As I have tasted this wine on several occasions I feel it unjust to mark up this particular bottle.

Captures the palate upon entry, so much on offer, a silent explosion of flavour that concentrates the mind totally. Then slowly fades leaving a mere shadow of its former self. Wow!

Cool entry, plump and juicy, succulent, Such balance. The palate is stunned by the creamy imbibe. Terrific persistence. On the back end fruit flavours in bold print. Can Chianti Classico get any better? Trophy winner of a wine.

On the palate is has a delicate slender body, with just enough weight to make an impression. At this stage it has a citrusy character. But it’s still a baby. Yet all said and done: it does show potential.
