Tasting Lazio Wines with Ian D’Agata

An unexpected invitation by world eminent wine journalist and author, Ian D’Agata to join him in tasting and reviewing, recently released wines of Lazio in Rome, was not to be missed.

The tasting was organised and held at the renowned Trimani Enoteca in Rome (est. in 1821), fellow tasters were the enoteca owners Paolo Trimani, Francesco Trimani and Italian wine journalist Fabio Ciarla.

I personally tasted 110 wines, and wrote tasting notes on circa 70 of them (see below).

A brief word on the Lazio region on Italy’s surrounding the city of Rome, bordering with Tuscany to the north, Campania in the south, Abruzzo and Le Marche to the east and Umbria in the north east.

The Lazio region volcanic hills offer perfect conditions for viticulture because of the fertile and well drained land. A mixture of lava and tufa soils supply plenty of potassium, this suits the acidity in white wine production. The proximity of the Mediterranean Sea to the west brings cool sea breezes that assist in lowering the drier and warmer temperatures near the coast. The mountainous zones have various microclimates that assist and shield some of the chillier wind from the Apennines in the northeast of the region.

Lazio is better known for white wine production. The cultivated grape varieties are Trebbiano, Malvasia Puntinata and Malvasia di Candia being the most used. Further white grape varieties of this area are: Cesanese, Bellone, Grechetto Bianco, Bombino Bianco.

These white wines tend to be crisp, lightly textured and dry and are mostly consumed young.

Red grape types include: Aleatico, Bombino Nero, Nero Buono, Canaiolo, Cesanese, Merlot, Sangiovese and Montepulciano.

Overall there are about 200 different grape varieties to be found in Lazio.

Red wine cultivation is centred east of Castelli Romani mainly around the village of Piglio with Cesanese del Piglio wine as one of the benchmarks. Cesanese grape produces deep rich wines with soft tannins and lifted aromatic profile under the DOC guidelines.

Circa 50,000 acres of land in Lazio are under vine, about 40% of wine production is dedicated to DOC and DOCG, 20% to IGT the rest being used for bulk use.

Lazio offers 3 DOCG denominations: Cesanese del Piglio, Frascati Superiore, Cannellino di Frascati.

To the best of my knowledge there are over 27 DOC in Lazio, the most famous are Castelli Romani, Frascati and Est! Est! Est!

Frascati is a white wine made from Malvasia and Trebbiano, where nuances of peach, lemon, Mediterranean herbs are to be found.

Frascati Superiore DOC is a higher graded wine, restrictions in vine density, higher alcohol content and primary the use of Malvasia del Lazio. The Riserva is required to have twelve months more ageing, the result being a wine with more depth and character, higher floral aromas with hints of almond and grapefruit.

Orvieto DOC is a wine that not only comes from the south of Umbria but also north of Lazio. It is made up of 60% Grechetto or Trebbiano, then the remainder can be a blend of other white indigenous grapes of the area. Although most are a blend of the two principle varieties.

Est! Est! Est! di Montefiascone DOC wines are known for fruity notes and sharp acidity.

I can imagine more than a few of my readers asking themselves “ How can a Lazio/ Rome region become known as Est!Est!Est!”? The legend has it in the 12th century a visiting nobleman Johannes Defuk, had his servant ride ahead and try all the local wines to find the best. He was supposed to mark the taverns with the best wine with an Est! If they were worthy of a stop. When Defuk arrived in Montefiascone he found written “Est” three times because the servant liked the wines so much!😂

Castelli Romani DOC wines extoll, harmony, aromatics both in taste and fragrance, they produce white and red wine, the latter being blended from Cesanese, Montepulciano, Merlot, Sangiovese and Nero Buono.

Cesanese grape variety is mainly grown in Lazio, sometimes also used on the Tuscan coast.Technically there are two types of this grape: Cesanese Comune and Cesanese di Affile. The latter tends to be of slightly better quality.

Wines made using Cesanese grape are generally noted for ruby red in colour, some with dark violet undertones. Soft on the palate, rounded acidity with black fruits, nuances of spice. These wines are fruity, well structured, medium bodied.

Cesanese del Piglio found in the east of Rome, must include 90% of either type of Cesanese, highly aromatic and well structured. Further barrel ageing produces wines labelled Superiore and Superiore Riserva.

Cesanese Olevano Romano vineyards surround the town that gives its name. These wines are noted for their intense floral aroma and complex minerality, fine tannins and fresh acidity.

Cesanese di Affile grape has small berries and darker leaves, than the common Cesanese. It does not thrive at high altitudes and is slow to ripen, therefore is often harvested in mid October. Cesanese di Affile wine comes in dry and sweet versions.

During a break in the tasting, Ian graciously agreed to partake to my High Five with Tony Wood interview:

Very useful to get more insight into the huge and perhaps under appreciated quality in Lazio . Of the 200 or so varieties recorded, it would be interesting to know which of these are considered interesting in the face of climate and consumer change.
